Height is a measurement of vertical length (upright position) of someone or something from head to foot or from the ground to top. It expresses:
Human height is also called stature, and it describes a person’s natural distance from the base of the feet to the top of the head in a human body, standing upright. Height is usually measured in centimeters with the metric system and feet and inches with the Imperial and Us customary systems.
Studies have shown mixed results related to the correlation between height and longevity, but still, most of them indicate that smaller stature is linked to a longer life expectancy.
Average height is shared in populations with common genetic background and environmental factors and the exceptional height variations (around 20 % deviation from the mean) within a population is considered abnormal and due to medical conditions such as gigantism or dwarfism.
The multi-disciplinary study of all aspects of human physical growth and height is called auxology. It includes a combination of medicine, nutrition, biology, genetics, anthropology, economics, history, sociology, and psychology.
Differences in human stature are 60–80% hereditary, but the exact relationship between genetics and environment is complex and uncertain.
Here is a list of the heights of some celebrities, scientists, musicians, and other famous people. Have in mind that the height expressed below is an approximation as the conversion from feet and inches into centimeters is not always exact (the values are in some cases rounded up).
