A second is an SI base unit of time which is also a fundamental unit of time for all measuring systems. It was defined as 1/86400 of a solar day, which turned out to be not accurate because the solar day is not a constant. There is another intuitive understanding that a second is about the period between beats of a human heart.

A standard unit of time representing one rotation of the Earth on its axis with respect to the sun. A day consists of 24 hours, or 1440 minutes, or 86400 seconds.
