The word Length has several meanings, but most commonly it can be defined as a duration or quantity of time occupied by something or as a distance, measurement of one dimension of something from one end to another or one point to another. It is different from height (vertical extent) and width (measurement from side to side, how wide something is). The unit of length is a fundamental unit which represents a pre-defined distance (or length) with a constant value and other units derive from it. The different measurement units for Length (along with other base units) are a part of complex classification systems:
There are some obsolete units for a length such as alien, button, cana, cubit, league, line, pace, palm, step, verst, etc. Derived units are associated with derived quantities and are often a combination of two base quantities. Like velocity, being a combination of base quantities like time and length, and respectively the derived unit used for velocity is meter per second (m/s).
Common units of length are: inch, meter, yard, centimeter, millimeter, kilometer, foot, mile, angstrom, rod, astronomical unit, chain, furlong, fathom, nautical mile, parsec, picometer, cun, finger, etc.
